What is a “worthy house” in Matthew 10

The key verses are:

Matthew 10:11-13
“And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.
And when ye come into an house, salute it.
And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.”

In the immediate context, Jesus was sending the twelve apostles to “the lost sheep of the house of Israel” (Matthew 10:6). They were not to shop around for the most comfortable lodging or use ministry for personal gain. They were to find a household that was morally reputable, hospitable, and receptive to the kingdom message.

A “worthy house” did not mean a sinless house. It meant a house fit to receive the Lord’s servants because it welcomed the truth they preached.

By contrast, an unworthy house or city rejected the message. Jesus said:

Matthew 10:14
“And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.”

So the issue was not merely hospitality, but reception of God’s message. To receive Christ’s messengers was, in principle, to receive Christ’s authority behind them.

Doctrinally, this passage teaches several things:

First, God’s servants should be discerning. They were to “enquire who in it is worthy” (Matthew 10:11). They were not to lodge carelessly with anyone who might compromise the testimony of the message.

Second, faithful ministry is not to be driven by money or luxury. Jesus had just said, “freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).

Third, receiving God’s Word brings blessing. The Lord said, “let your peace come upon it” (Matthew 10:13). That peace was connected to receiving the Lord’s servants and the message they carried.

Fourth, rejecting God’s Word brings accountability. The Lord warned that judgment would be severe for those who rejected the witness given to them.

For today, the principle is this: a “worthy house” is a home open to God’s Word, respectful toward God’s servants, and willing to identify with the truth. It is not a perfect house, but a receptive and faithful one.
