Rods into serpents

The Bible does not tell us the exact physical mechanism, but Exodus 7 plainly presents Pharaoh’s magicians as producing a real counterfeit sign by their “enchantments,” under satanic power permitted by God.

Exodus 7:10-12, KJV:

“And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.
Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.
For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.”

There are two main possibilities people sometimes suggest: mere trickery, or genuine supernatural activity. The wording, however, strongly favors a genuine satanic counterfeit rather than merely a stage trick. Scripture says, “they became serpents,” and specifically attributes what the magicians did to their “enchantments.”

That does not mean Satan has creative power equal to God. He does not. Satan is a created being and operates only within limits God permits. But Scripture shows that Satan and evil spirits can produce supernatural signs.

For example:

2 Thessalonians 2:9:

“Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,”

And Revelation speaks of satanically empowered signs:

Revelation 13:13-14:

“And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do…”

Notice that “lying wonders” does not necessarily mean the phenomena themselves are imaginary. They are lying in their purpose—they deceive men and oppose the truth of God.

There is also an important progression in Exodus. The magicians could imitate certain judgments for a time, but they could not remove the judgments, and eventually their ability stopped.

In Exodus 8:18-19, when Moses brought forth lice:

“And the magicians did so with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not…
Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God…”

That limitation is significant. Satan can imitate, but he cannot equal God. Pharaoh’s magicians could counterfeit some of Moses’ signs, but Aaron’s rod “swallowed up their rods.” God demonstrated immediately that their power was subordinate and inferior.

So the best plain-reading conclusion is: Pharaoh’s magicians, probably through demonic or satanic power associated with their occult enchantments, were permitted to transform their rods into serpents. Scripture does not tell us precisely how the transformation occurred, so we should not speculate beyond that.

The central lesson of Exodus 7 is not the greatness of Egyptian magic, but the absolute supremacy of the LORD: the counterfeit could imitate God’s sign temporarily, but it could not overcome God’s power.
