Genesis 37 – Joseph’s Dreams and Betrayal

  • Jacob loved Joseph more than his other sons and gave him a coat of many colors.

  • Joseph had two dreams: one where his brothers’ sheaves bowed to his, and another where the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed to him.

  • His brothers hated him for these dreams and plotted against him.

  • When Joseph came to check on them, they cast him into a pit. Some wanted to kill him, but instead they sold him to Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver.

  • The brothers dipped his coat in goat’s blood and deceived Jacob, who mourned, thinking Joseph was dead.

Genesis 38 – Judah and Tamar

  • Judah left his brothers and married a Canaanite woman. He had three sons: Er, Onan, and Shelah.

  • Er married Tamar but was wicked, and the Lord slew him. Onan refused to raise up seed for his brother, so the Lord slew him also.

  • Tamar disguised herself as a harlot and conceived by Judah. Later, when Judah sought to condemn her, she revealed his signet, bracelets, and staff as proof he was the father.

  • Tamar bore twin sons, Pharez and Zarah, from whom would later come the line of Christ.

Genesis 39 – Joseph in Potiphar’s House

  • Joseph was sold into Potiphar’s house in Egypt. The Lord was with him, and he prospered.

  • Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce Joseph, but he refused, saying it would be sin against God.

  • She falsely accused him, and Joseph was cast into prison.

  • Even in prison, the Lord was with Joseph, and he found favor with the keeper of the prison.
