Exodus 1 – Israel in Egypt

  • The children of Israel multiplied greatly in Egypt after Joseph’s death.

  • A new Pharaoh arose who did not know Joseph.

  • Fearing their numbers, he oppressed them with hard bondage.

  • Despite affliction, they continued to grow.

  • Pharaoh commanded that all Hebrew baby boys be killed, but the midwives (Shiphrah and Puah) feared God and disobeyed him.

Exodus 2 – The Birth and Early Life of Moses

  • Moses was born to a Levite family. His mother hid him for three months.

  • When she could no longer hide him, she placed him in an ark of bulrushes on the Nile.

  • Pharaoh’s daughter found him and raised him as her own son.

  • As an adult, Moses saw an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew and killed the Egyptian, hiding him in the sand.

  • When Pharaoh heard, Moses fled to Midian.

  • In Midian, Moses defended the daughters of Reuel (Jethro) at a well and was given Zipporah as wife.

  • The Israelites groaned under bondage, and God heard their cry, remembering His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Exodus 3 – God Calls Moses

  • Moses, tending Jethro’s flock, came to Mount Horeb (Sinai).

  • There, the angel of the LORD appeared in a burning bush that was not consumed.

  • God called to Moses, commissioning him to deliver Israel from Egypt.

  • Moses hesitated, asking “Who am I?” and “What shall I say unto them?”

  • God revealed His name: “I AM THAT I AM.”

  • God promised to be with Moses, to deliver Israel with mighty wonders, and to bring them to a land flowing with milk and honey.
