Msg #2610 Chapter Eight’s Six Questions
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
God uses six questions to answer a core principle of Romans chapter 8. Clearly this chapter categorizes the function of the Holy Spirit of God in a believer’s life. C.I. Scofield eloquently points out, “Hitherto in Romans the Holy Spirit has been mentioned but once, in this chapter he is mentioned 19 times!” With reckless abandoned Paul has reckoned that the sufferings, infirmities, and “all things” that envelop us are “Not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (vrs.18,26,28) We augment that truth with 1Cor.10:13&Eph.2:7. God justifies it with the revelation that the born- again, saved-from-condemnation believer is predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son! (vr.29). That, and that alone, is the Biblical doctrine of predestination, and God drives that stake deep with six redundant questions. In this essay we expound five: “What shall we say?”, and “Who can be against us?”, are two making an introduction (vr31). The next, introduced in our last essay, is, “How shall he NOT with him, also freely give us all things?” (vr.32). It resonates from Ephesians 1:3, God has “blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ”, and in Luke 11:13 “How much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” God will bless! And then “Who shall lay anything to the charge of God’s elect?” We are just-as-if-I’d never sinned, by God! Cf.Rom.3:24,28,4:2,5:1,8-9!
The fifth question, “Who is he that condemneth?”, again it is redundant; “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ” (Rom.8:1 ). Our Lord Jesus Christ, the one mediator between God and man, the Daysman that can lay his hand on God and man, he is our intercessor! (1Tim.2:5,Job.9:32-35,Rev.12:10). Redundant is as redundant does.
