Msg #2609 For Good is Assured.
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Rom.8:31). The theme of this dissertation to all that be in Rome, Gentiles, beloved of God, called to be saints, is the absolute righteousness of God. Righteousness is the quality of ALWAYS being right, NEVER being wrong. The “these things” in this reckoning of Romans 8:31 are from verse 28, the “all things” that absolutely must work together for good because justified believers are predestined to be conformed to the image of Christ. The reality in these six questions, verses 31-35 is best understood when one rehearses a sentence from Romans 3. It has a familiar-memorized, centerpiece in verse 23, but it goes on to call Christ a “propitiation” which involves appeasing the wrath of an angry deity, and conciliating the favor of one offended, with an atoning sacrifice; wherein Christ’s death literally assuaged the wrath of God. But the sentence goes even further to show that God had to go to the very edge of his righteousness, as it were, to accept the substitution: it is forbearance, i.e. the restraint of passion, the forbearance of God! That propitiation is applied only through faith in his blood. The Hebrew word Selah “ponder that truth” could be a fitting close to this six verse sentence! (Rom.3:21-26).
Back in chapter 8 the questions of verse 31 are answered with the question of verse 32: “He that spared not his own son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?” Again, there is this assurance that God will make all things work together for good. You can trust him, because we trust him for so much more, he saved us from all condemnation!
