In Genesis 26, what does “sporting” mean?

In Genesis 26:8, the KJV says:

“And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.”

Here “sporting” means playing with, caressing, or showing affectionate familiarity toward Rebekah. It describes conduct intimate enough that Abimelech immediately realized Rebekah was Isaac’s wife, not merely his sister (Genesis 26:9). The word does not mean athletic “sports” in the modern sense; it carries the older idea of playful, affectionate interaction.
