Msg #2637 Thine is the Power

What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory for ever“ is an acknowledgment of the triune God in the Lord’s Prayer. In it, the omnipotence of Christ comes to focus. Christ laid aside his “Omni” attributes to become flesh and dwell among us. In his John 17 prayer he asks, “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was” (17:5). While in the flesh, Jesus had power “over all flesh” (17:3), as should we. But in his resurrected body, he said “all power is given onto me in heaven, and in earth” (Matt.28:18), In the flesh he had power to forgive sins (Matt.9:1-8) and he had power to raise the dead. He said, “For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will” (John.5:21). Consequently, we can be free from condemnation, Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (5:24).

The “all power” given to the resurrected Christ is bigger than we perceive in the shallow end of the pool. He now has power to quicken, raise the dead, and be their judge. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man (John.5:25-27). Truly, “Thine is the power.”
