2 Peter 3:10 … the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

As western believers we need to admit that we have too much stuff. We are addicted to things. Extremely true is Solomon’s sage adage – Proverbs 27:20 …the eyes of man are never satisfied.

A few years prior to my dad’s passing to glory, we were together in his garage. Looking at his life’s accumulation of tools and sundry items on the workbench he remarked, “What am I going to do with all of this stuff?” That began his systematic ridding himself of it. When he went to glory, he had very little stuff remaining. Wisely, he had left little here to access much there.

In Christ’s Sermon on the Mount, He declares for us not to lay up treasures (stuff) here upon earth, but to lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven. (Mt. 6:19) Peter’s second epistle reminds believers that since everything we hold today will be dissolved, we ought to be focused upon living godly and be looking for “new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness” (2 Peter 3:13).

The stuff we value today may be on the shelves of a Goodwill store or at a flea market tomorrow. With this in mind, what valuables have you laid up for eternity?

Don’t allow the stuff here to wrap its tentacles around you so much that it squeezes the spiritual life with its accompanying eternal perspective out of you.

What stuff do you need to rid yourself of today?

Reflection—Perhaps it’s time to start cleaning out that garage or closet and start filling up your heavenly closet with things of greater value.
