Msg #2619 The Vilest Mother

What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

The vilest woman to stain a page of the Holy Bible is without controversy, named Jezebel. The man that would reach down to make her the evil mother of his children was a king of Israel, called Ahab; the Bible says of him, “Ahab the son of Omri” (five verses earlier “Omri wrought evil in the eyes of the LORD, and did worse than all that were before him”) that Ahab “did evil in the sight of the Lord above all that were before him. And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jereboam the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jezebel, the daughter of EthBaal King of the Zidonians …” (1King.16:30-31). Her name means “Baal, he is god” and in the next two chapters, the Lord arranges her head-on-collision with his prophet Elijah, whose name means “the LORD he is God”. No better word picture of that contest could be made than that of R.G. Lee in his famous recorded sermon, “Payday Someday”. God always wins in such head-on-collisions, and Satan always resorts to behind the scenes, deceitful, manipulative, coercive measures, laden with evil, and corrupt tactics. In 1887 British Lord Acton observed, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Such manipulative evil from Jezebel is exposed in chapter 21 where her vile tactics murder Naboth and confiscate his vineyard for her pouting husband king Ahab.

God designed and created the woman to be the appropriate helper (help-meet) to man. When she steps down to become the opposer of Jehovah in home, husband and children, the title Jezebel conveys God‘s promised destruction (Ps.34:16). In stark contrast the virtuous woman of Proverbs 31:10–31 captures God’s promise for rich blessing. Happy Mother’s Day.
