Msg#2543 Revive Us Again

What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease. Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? … Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? Shew us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation. … Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts, cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved.” (Ps.85:4-7,80:19). Evangelist Fielder outlines some things about revival from 1Samuel. Revival is NOT a series of meetings, a time of excitement, a surge in attendance, a surge of evangelism, a resurrection, a miracle, OR a sovereign act of God, BUT the proper use of means whereby his people “humble themselves, and pray, and seek God’s face, and turn from their wicked ways” (2Chron.7:14). It is a resuscitation of life or consciousness. Charles Finney called it “a new refined obedience to God” and scripture teaches us, “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice” (1Sam.15:22). Vance Havner said, “Revival is the church falling in love with God again, i.e. subnormal Christians returning to normal.” “If ye love me, keep my commandments. … Abide in me, and I in you. … for without me ye can do nothing” (John 14:15,15:4-5). Revival is never preached down from heaven, only prayed down. If a focus is on what it costs to serve him, one has forgotten what it cost God to save their soul. Again revival’s prerequisites are, humble yourself, seek God’s face, and pray. Hannah was barren, and dissatisfied in that condition; God creates us wanting to reproduce; for a genuine Christian all things are become new, so that they can be ministers of reconciliation and ambassadors for Christ (2Cor.5:17-21). Hannah “was in bitterness of soul, and prayed, and wept sore,” as should we.
