Psalm 101 is a psalm of David declaring how he intends to rule his house and kingdom in holiness. Verse 3 states:
“I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me.”
Meaning in Context
1. A Deliberate Moral Guard
“I will set” implies intentional action. David is not speaking about accidental exposure but about what he chooses to place before himself. As king, he had access to wealth, power, and influence. He is declaring that he will not intentionally entertain or promote evil.
This includes:
- Wicked counsel
- Corrupt policies
- Immoral practices
- Idolatrous influences
2. Leadership Integrity
Psalm 101 is largely about righteous leadership:
- “I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way” (v.2)
- “A froward heart shall depart from me” (v.4)
- “He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house” (v.7)
Thus, verse 3 connects directly to governance. A king who fills his eyes with wickedness will soon fill his kingdom with it.
3. Separation from Evil
“I hate the work of them that turn aside.”
This reflects biblical separation. David distinguishes between the righteous and those who “turn aside” (depart from God’s law). He refuses alliance with corruption.
This principle is consistent with:
- Job 31:1 — “I made a covenant with mine eyes.”
- Proverbs 4:23 — “Keep thy heart with all diligence.”
- Philippians 4:8 — Think on things that are pure.
4. Personal Holiness
Eyes are gateways to the heart. What one continually looks at influences desires, thoughts, and behavior. David is committing to moral discipline.
It does not mean he will never see sin (that would be impossible), but that he will not:
- Deliberately gaze upon it for pleasure
- Promote it
- Meditate upon it
- Allow it to shape his rule or personal life
Ironically, David later failed in this very area with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11), which shows how serious this principle truly is.
Practical Application
For believers today, the principle includes:
- Guarding what we watch and consume
- Refusing entertainment that glorifies sin
- Rejecting corrupt influences in leadership and ministry
- Choosing purity in thought life
The verse teaches that holiness begins with intentional boundaries. What we allow before our eyes eventually affects our heart and conduct.
Psalm 101 is a model of righteous resolve — a commitment that godly leadership and godly living start with disciplined vision.
