What Are Your Heirlooms?
For Women by Women

Psalm 78:4, 6-7 We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. 6That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: 7That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
When I read these verses, I was made to think of what is passed down from generation to generation and their real value. Quilts, teapots, furniture, personal items, family property, and sometime even financial stocks are passed down to the next generation(s). While it is not sinful to pass down these types of heirlooms, none of them can sustain our future loved ones during hard times or provide them with eternal benefits.
The Webster 1828 dictionary defines an heirloom as something of special value handed down from one generation to another. What could be of greater value than — (1) praises of the LORD, (2) the strength of God, (3) His wondrous works?
When those three things become a daily part of our life, handed down from one generation to the next, a foundation of hope is established. The wealth of history learned is a hope that is set upon God Almighty, His great power, and the knowing of the wondrous works which He hath done.
Many years ago, our young daughter wrote a song with the words, “There is Hope beyond your point of view.” The Blessed Hope is what will see them through their great trials of life, when no earthly person or things can.
As we continually speak of the wondrous works of God, it is helping to train the minds of our children to think of a mighty God with Whom all things are possible. This thought process encourages obedience to the Word of God.
Reflection—What heirlooms are we passing down?
