Root of Narcissism Part 1

2 Corinthians 5:15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
The title of a narcissist is perhaps one of the most widely used terms today. The Mayo Clinic describes narcissism as a – Narcissistic Personality Disorder. It is a mental health condition in which people have an unreasonably high sense of their own importance.
The world tries to label sin and explain it away as mental disorders. Scripture teaches that as a result of Adam and Eve’s disobedience in the Garden of Eden, sin entered into the world.
A person who has an unreasonably high sense of their own importance has this struggle because of their sinful nature. Jesus Christ came to give us victory over these issues. God’s Word says in Romans 8:37, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”
Jesus Christ did not live for Himself but rather gave His life for us. Jesus Christ was not self-consumed and self-centered. In fact, Jesus was a compassionate, generous friend to the woman at the well, the blind man, and the multitudes that were led about as sheep without a Shepherd, etc.
As our text verse says, our lives should not be ones of self-consumption, but rather they should be lived for the One who gave His life for us. Our lives should not be ones that focus on our own needs but should be focused on the needs of those around us.
Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
Reflection—When we see ourselves as we really are, it is impossible to be given over to pride.
