My Shepherd

Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
This outline is not original with me; I first heard it from my wife who was teaching a children’s class. It sure spoke to me.
The Scriptures present Jesus Christ as our Shepherd in four beautiful and powerful ways:
First, He is the Good Shepherd. Jesus declared, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). His goodness is not passive; it is proven in sacrifice. He did not merely guide us—He died for us. The Good Shepherd lays down His life so that wandering sheep may be brought home.
Second, He is the Great Shepherd. Hebrews 13:20 says, “Now the God of peace… brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep.” His greatness is seen in His resurrection power. The Great Shepherd not only saves us—He sustains us. He leads us in paths of righteousness, equips us to do His will, and works in us “that which is wellpleasing in his sight.”
Third, He is the Chief Shepherd. Peter writes, “And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away” (1 Peter 5:4). The Chief Shepherd is the One who is coming again. He oversees His flock with perfect wisdom, and He will reward faithfulness when He returns. His care is not only for today—it stretches into eternity.
Finally, He is my Shepherd. David proclaimed, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1). This is the Shepherd’s ministry made personal. He knows your name, your needs, your fears, and your future. The One Who died for the world walks daily with you.
The Good Shepherd saves you. The Great Shepherd strengthens you. The Chief Shepherd is coming for you. And my Shepherd stays with you.
Reflection—Rest today in the Shepherd who never loses a sheep and never leaves one behind.
