Msg #2632 Forgive Us As We Forgive

What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

Teaching us to pray Jesus said, say… “Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors” (Matt.6:12). The breath after “Amen”, he hits that line with a hammer, “For if you forgive men, their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: but if you forgive not men, their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses (vrs.14–15). The gist is, when you are holding a cord of unforgiveness, the lie you told yesterday, and the vice you stumbled into today, will not fit into 1John 1:9, and you are not cleansed from all unrighteousness; you have a serious spiritual constipation problem. One must forgive all offenses to relieve that blockage.

Matthew 18 clarifies that offenses will come (vr.17), that if it is a brother that offended, there are steps to take (vrs.15–16), and if the offender asks forgiveness, you should forgive them 70×7 times! (vrs.21–22). But the capstone of the teaching that a Christian must forgive any and all offenses is in Matthew 18:23–35. In this parable, the unforgiving debtor made his lord wroth, and was delivered to the tormentors till he should pay his lord all that was owed to him (vr.34). Jesus said, “So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses” (vrs.35).

Three times God said of Israel, “And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more” (Jer.31:34,Heb.8:12,10:17). I might never forget an offense or offender that cut me and my family to the core, but if I remember it with my teeth grit, and unforgiveness in my heart, that root of bitterness destroys my walk with my Lord. Don’t grip onto it, let it go; forgive that offender; do it before they ask forgiveness; have the compassion of Christ (Matt.18:23-35).
