Msg #2630 Daily Bread

What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

“Give us this day our daily bread,” or more particularly for disciples, “Give us day by day our daily bread” (Matt.6:11, Luk.11:3). In our land of plenty, we need to focus on this prayer request, and Jesus hones it with particular emphasis. In Matthew 6:25–34, right after clarifying, “Ye cannot serve God and mammon,” he presents the well fed and cared for sparrow, he points out God’s complete control of one’s stature, and calls out the glorious raiment of the lily. He concludes, “Take no thought, saying what shall we eat? Or what shall we drink? Or wherewithal shall we be clothed?” (vrs.31). For the Born–again, Bible believing Christian, life is more than these, our emphasis is, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (vrs.33).

In Luke, when he teaches these same precepts to his disciples, he adds additional applications that every genuine-believer should explore. “And he said unto his disciples… Fear not little flock; for it is the Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Luk.12:22, 32). Jesus’s discipleship training says “Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning; and ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their Lord, … that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open to him immediately” (vrs.35–36). Now Peter, looking at his Lord, does not yet comprehend waiting for his coming, and responds, Lord, are you talking to us? (vrs.41). Jesus’ answers with an extensive lesson on responsible stewardship (vrs.42–53). “Who then is that faithful and wise steward, … whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing” (vrs.42-43). Christ’s return is open ended on purpose, keep looking up, and let’s be about the Father’s business.
