Msg #2628 Thy Kingdom Come

What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

When Jesus taught his disciples to pray his second sentence was, “Thy kingdom come.” Rote repetition connects it to, “Thy will be done,” but Jesus did not. What is the Father’s kingdom that we are asking for? Gabriel said JESUS “shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest, and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David” (Luk.1:31–32). His disciples asked “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” (Act.1:6). And when Jesus said, “Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand”, posthaste it was said, “Then began Jesus to upgrade the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not” (Matt.3:2,11:20). They rejected the king and his kingdom and he responds “The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing for the fruits thereof”(Matt.21:43). Jesus told his disciples “It is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given”(Matt.13:11). He then gives seven parables with title “The kingdom of heaven is like …” (13:3,24,31,33,44,45,47). These have this capstone, “So shall it be at the end of the world” (13:47).

Luke records, “But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him, saying, We will not have this man to reign over us.” At reckoning time he said, “But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me” (Luk.19:14,27). After the millennial reign of Christ, under a new heaven, with a new earth, there is “A pure river of water of life proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb” (Rev.22:1). It is a big deal to pray, “Thy kingdom come.”
