Them That Sit in Darkness

By Hunter Grills

October 27, 2026

Luke 1:79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

In my Bible reading this morning, I read this verse regarding John the Baptist and the ministry where he would serve. I found the verse very applicable to us today as disciples of Jesus. Everywhere we look, we see dark decorations and marketing for Halloween. The celebration of death and evil should cause us to realize the battle we are in. This world is in darkness and in need of the light of the gospel. God’s Word is a light that shines in a dark place.

2 Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

As the body of Christ, we must be busy spreading the light of Christ to them that sit in darkness. The Bible is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. We have been given a command to share the Light to a dark world. We do not have to sit back and wait on a calling or a feeling when we already have a command in Scripture. The world is sitting in darkness, and we have the light. Now more than ever we must be busy about our Father’s business of sharing the light to a dark world.

Matthew 5:14-16 Ye are the light of the world… Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Reflection—We are not only light-receivers but light-givers, shining in a dark world.
