In Jesus’ model prayer we pray, “Thy kingdom come.” In the closing there is a 3D “why,” that begins, “For thine is the kingdom.” The first kingdom is future tense, the latter is present tense; for the born-again believer, “Behold, the kingdom of God is within you” (Lu.17:21). In “Personal Consecration”, 1897, Hubert Brooke writes,“If it is a kingdom, there must be over it a king: and by the title of king there is implied rule, authority, government, dominion on his side; submission, obedience, service and subordination on ours.” The “Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Lu.2:11) is our present tense king, who will, future tense “rule all nations” (Rev.12.5).

A seven-fold call to Pharaoh said, “Let my people go, that they may serve me.” Israel was redeemed from mere bondage, oppression, cruelty and slavery; “We have a a far wider deliverance, a more wonderful escape, a deeper rest, a grander freedom, in which the soul is ransomed from the power of Satan and the bondage of sin. … What for? To what end? For what purpose?” “That they may serve me!”

Jesus said, “Ye call me Master and Lord, and ye say well, for so I am”, and on three occasions he said, “Follow me” (to Peter & Andrew, a dawdling disciple, and Matthew). It involved forsaking all else. After he said “I will give you rest” he said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me.” The King is the Divine Teacher, sit at his feet as learners, disciples, yea scholars … If any man will do his will, he shall know the doctrine (Jn.7:17). We are delivered from the guilt, penalty and dominion of sin, the bondage of Satan, and the fear of death … That we may serve him. Take his yoke upon you.
