What Is Hell, and What Is Hell Like?
Hell is a real place of conscious punishment for those who die without salvation through Jesus Christ. It is not merely a symbol of suffering, a temporary condition, the grave, or a state of unconsciousness. The Lord Jesus Christ spoke plainly and repeatedly about hell.
Hell Is a Real Place
Jesus said:
“And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments…”
—Luke 16:23
The rich man did not cease to exist when he died. His body was buried, but he remained conscious in hell. He could see, speak, remember, reason, feel pain, and recognize his terrible condition.
Hell is therefore not simply the grave. The rich man’s body was in the grave, but his soul was in hell.
Hell Is a Place of Torment
The rich man cried:
“I am tormented in this flame.”
—Luke 16:24
The Bible does not describe hell as mild discomfort. It is called a place of “torments.” The rich man desired only one drop of water to cool his tongue, yet even that small measure of relief was unavailable.
Jesus also warned:
“And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.”
—Matthew 13:42
Hell includes suffering, sorrow, regret, anguish, and hopelessness.
Hell Is a Place of Fire
The fire of hell is presented in Scripture as real and dreadful.
Jesus said:
“And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:”
—Mark 9:43
He continued:
“Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”
—Mark 9:44
The Bible calls it “everlasting fire”:
“Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:”
—Matthew 25:41
Hell was prepared for the devil and his angels, but every person who rejects God’s salvation will share in that judgment.
Hell Is a Place of Darkness
Hell is described not only as fire, but also as darkness:
“But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
—Matthew 8:12
There is no contradiction between fire and darkness. Hell is a supernatural place of divine punishment. Its nature is determined by God, not by the limitations of ordinary earthly fire.
It is a place separated from the light, comfort, fellowship, mercy, and blessings of God.
Hell Is a Place of Memory
Abraham said to the rich man:
“Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things…”
—Luke 16:25
The rich man remembered his former life. He remembered his family. He understood why he was there. He also remembered that his five brethren were still alive and in danger of coming to the same place.
One of the torments of hell will be the memory of rejected opportunities, ignored warnings, neglected sermons, unanswered conviction, and refusal to trust Christ.
Hell Is a Place With No Escape
Abraham told the rich man:
“And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed…”
—Luke 16:26
The gulf was “fixed.” No one could cross from hell into comfort. The rich man could not leave, change his destination, or receive another opportunity to be saved.
The Bible says:
“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
—Hebrews 9:27
There is no biblical purgatory, no reincarnation, and no second chance for salvation after death.
Hell Is a Place of Regret
The rich man begged Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his five brethren:
“Lest they also come into this place of torment.”
—Luke 16:28
In life, the rich man had ignored the truth. In hell, he became concerned about others, but it was too late for him to change his own condition.
Abraham answered:
“They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.”
—Luke 16:29
God has given mankind His written Word. A person does not need a vision, miracle, dream, or message from the dead. He needs to believe the Word of God.
Hell Will Be Cast Into the Lake of Fire
Hell is presently the place of torment for the unsaved dead, but it is not the final stage of their punishment. After the great white throne judgment, death and hell will be cast into the lake of fire.
“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.”
—Revelation 20:14
The following verse warns:
“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”
—Revelation 20:15
The lake of fire is the final and everlasting destination of the devil, his angels, and all who die without Christ.
Hell Is Everlasting
Jesus used the same word—“everlasting”—to describe both the punishment of the lost and the life of the saved:
“And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.”
—Matthew 25:46
If eternal life is everlasting, then everlasting punishment is also everlasting. The Bible does not teach annihilation. The lost do not eventually cease to exist. Their punishment continues.
Who Goes to Hell?
Every person is a sinner:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
—Romans 3:23
Sin earns death:
“For the wages of sin is death…”
—Romans 6:23
A person is not condemned merely because he committed more sins than someone else. All have sinned, and no one can earn salvation through morality, religion, baptism, church membership, sacraments, or good works.
The decisive issue is whether a person has received Jesus Christ by faith.
“He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already…”
—John 3:18
How Can a Person Escape Hell?
Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and rose again.
“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:”
—1 Corinthians 15:3–4
Salvation is entirely by grace through faith, apart from human works:
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
—Ephesians 2:8–9
God offers eternal life as a free gift:
“But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
—Romans 6:23
A sinner must recognize his guilt and place his faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work—not in personal goodness or religious works.
“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
—Romans 10:13
Hell is real, terrible, conscious, inescapable, and everlasting. But no one needs to go there. Jesus Christ paid the full price for sin and freely saves every sinner who trusts Him.
