2 Peter 3:9 The Lord … is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

From beginning to end, the Bible is a Book about God in action on behalf of mankind. His desirous will is for no one to perish, and so He sets out to save people from their sins. He is very longsuffering.

One day Jesus said that He must needs go through Samaria (John 4:4). This inconvenient route was because there was a needy woman and city there. This is the true heart of the Lord and of missions. It is willing to go the extra mile to show the love of God.

One aspect of missions relates to the hope of the condemned. People need the Lord, and without Him, they have no hope. They are lost and condemned, no matter how happy they may seem in this life. Underneath, where God sees, they are living a hopeless life.

Ephesians 2:12 That at that time ye were without Christ… having no hope, and without God in the world:

Peter’s message embodies the need for missions and the hopelessness of people without the Lord Jesus. Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Missions shows the heart of Jesus. Missions holds out hope for the condemned. And missions is the health of the church. Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

Someone said that the best remedy of a sick church is to put it on a missionary diet. We do have a commission, and we need to obey it. By the grace of God, let us not lose the burden and heartfelt zeal for the lost.

Reflection—We often speak of the Second Coming of Christ while most of the world has not heard of the First Coming.
