Genesis 26 – Isaac and Abimelech

  • Famine strikes the land, and Isaac goes to Gerar, where God tells him not to go to Egypt but stay where He directs.

  • God reaffirms the covenant He made with Abraham, promising blessings, descendants, and land.

  • Isaac, like Abraham before him, says Rebekah is his sister out of fear. Abimelech discovers the truth but protects them.

  • God blesses Isaac, and his crops prosper a hundredfold. His wealth and power stir envy from the Philistines, who stop up his father’s wells.

  • Isaac digs new wells, and God appears again, promising His presence. Abimelech seeks peace with Isaac, and they make a covenant at Beersheba.

  • Esau, at age forty, marries two Hittite women, which brings grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

Genesis 27 – Jacob Deceives Isaac

  • Isaac, old and nearly blind, calls Esau to prepare venison so he can bless him.

  • Rebekah overhears and instructs Jacob to disguise himself as Esau.

  • Jacob, wearing Esau’s clothes and covered with goat skins, deceives Isaac and receives the blessing meant for Esau.

  • Esau returns too late and weeps bitterly when he realizes his blessing was taken. He vows to kill Jacob.

  • Rebekah warns Jacob and urges him to flee to her brother Laban in Haran until Esau’s anger cools.

Genesis 28 – Jacob’s Dream at Bethel

  • Isaac sends Jacob away to Mesopotamia to find a wife among Laban’s daughters, charging him not to marry a Canaanite. He blesses Jacob again, reaffirming God’s covenant.

  • Esau, seeing that his marriages displeased his parents, takes another wife from Ishmael’s family.

  • On the way to Haran, Jacob stops for the night at Luz. While sleeping with a stone for a pillow, he dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven, with angels ascending and descending.

  • God appears, confirming the promises made to Abraham and Isaac: land, descendants, and blessing for all nations.

  • Jacob awakens in awe, declares the place “Bethel” (House of God), and vows that if God provides for him, the Lord will be his God, and he will give a tenth of all he receives.
