Msg#2548 A First Advent Focus
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
“These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me” (Luk.24:44). An Advent is a long-awaited, highly anticipated arrival of a dignitary. Christ had a First Advent 4,000 years prophesied, and an upcoming Second Advent, 6,000 years prophesied. “It (the seed of a woman) shall bruise thy (Satan’s) head, and thou (Satan) shall bruise his (the promised seed’s) heel (Gen.3:15 ). In this month of December we focus attention on a tiny few First Advent prophecies that emphasize the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That will only suffice if we don’t let such a narrow focus obscure the larger, grander purpose of the First Advent; “For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved” (Jhn.3:17). And his nativity was not on the longest night commemorated by pagan Romanism, but when all Passover lambs were born, in the spring lambing season, when shepherds watched their flocks by night. The myriad of First Advent prophecy verses are daunting, but his birth was to be from the “seed” of woman, and from the line of David. His name was to be JESUS: “for he shall save his people from their sins” (Matt.1:21). In the Bible God puts great emphasis on ones name, especially when it is his only begotten Son! “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel… Which being interpreted is, God with us!” (Isa.7:14,Matt.1:23). “His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace” (Isa.9:6). Merry Christmas.
