Msg #2623 The Power of Thanksgiving

What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

A seasoned Missionary points to the Lord’s admonition, “Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (1Thes.5:16-18). Our Lord’s return is eminent and in the twinkling of an eye we will be caught out of these perilous times, “For God hath not appointed us to wrath” (vr.9). Consequently we are to watch and be sober (vr 6), to comfort and edify one another, … to know them which labour And to esteem them very highly (vrs.11-13), to warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men, and ever follow that which is good (vrs.14-15). That is seeking first the kingdom of God, and these three verses are integral. Being thankful IN all things is to “Commit thy works unto the LORD (Prov.16:3); Joseph did that superbly, “for God did send me before you to preserve life” (Gen.45:5b), not “look what I’ve done,” but “look what God’s done”; die to self, daily. Commit it to him, rejoice in all things, and the joy of the Lord will be your strength (Neh.8:10). Not just thy works, but “In all thy ways acknowledge him” in obedience and in thankfulness “and he shall direct they steps.” Praise the Lord, rejoicing and thankfulness produce trust, trust produces obedience, obedience produces joy and thanksgiving. Rejoicing, praying, and thanksgiving, “this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” We are taught to pray in God’s will, this is how it’s done! “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him” (Col.3:17). It’s not just “in Jesus name, Amen”, it’s acknowledging his name on the check.
