Msg #2603 Walking After the Spirit
What The Bible Says
Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (Rom.8:1). The “ifs” and “therefores” of Romans 8 are huge, and grand. “No condemnation” is a big deal, God sent his Son so we could be “saved” from condemnation (Jhn.3:17-18). There will be many who “believe” but do not get “in” (Matt.7:13-14,21-23); but when born-again “in”, you “walk after the Spirit“. Get the order right, your “walk” will not get you “in”, no matter your religion or religiosity, but once you are born-again “in”, you will have a walk that reflects 2Corinthians 5:17, “If any man be in Christ he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.“
- I. Scofield points out that, “Hitherto in Romans the Holy Spirit of God has been mentioned once (Rom5:5), in this 8th chapter, he is mentioned 19 times!” Let Romans Eight (not Romans Catholic) introduce you to pneumatology. First, learn some Bible English, in the Bible the holy Spirit of God, in the nominative case (direct or indirect object), is called the Holy Ghost, never in the possessive i.e. there is no holy Ghost of God.
Seven functions of the Spirit are listed in succession: In vr.1&4 we “walk after the Spirit” ie listen to him, not to the world; in vr.2 the law of the Spirit made us free; in vr.5 the Spirit minds the things of the Spirit; in vr.9 the Spirit dwells in us; in vr.10 the Spirit is life in you; in vr.11 the Spirit quickens us; in vr.13 the Spirit can mortify the deeds of the body; and in vr.15&16 the Spirit of adoption beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.
