“I beseech you therefore brethren …” opens the 12th chapter of the Epistle to the Romans. In the Life of Christ many came to Jesus beseeching him; the woman of Canaan came beseeching him for the sanity of her daughter; the leper came and knelled down beseeching him, “If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean”; a ruler of the synagogue came “greatly beseeching” for the life of his daughter (Matt.15, Mrk.1,5). It is so much greater than just asking, and now here is God beseeching you! There is urgency, life or death begging in this request, and it’s “by the mercies of God.” In Psalm 51 David beseeches “according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies”; the Creator of the world, through the pen of an apostle “Beseeches you” to “present your body as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God.” For the Gentile believers, it’s called a “reasonable service.”

At salvation God “owns” your soul, redeemed-bought and paid for; observes your spirit, ie “The spirit of man is the candle of Jehovah, searching all the inward parts of the belly” (Prov.20:27); and begs that our carnal bodies be holy, and sacrificed.

To Corinthians Paul says “I die daily” (1Cor.15:30-31); he explains, “the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin”, and “the carnal mind is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God” (Rom.7:14,8:7). “Knowing that our old man is crucified with him” (Rom.6:6), he writes to Galatians a song we sing, “I am crucified with Christ, therefore I no longer live, Jesus Christ now lives in me …” (Gal.2:20). Romans 12:2 tells how this is done, requiring being transformed, by the renewing of the mind. It’s a new year, let’s be about the Father’s business, especially this urgent plea.
