Genesis 1 – The Creation of the World

  • Days of Creation

    1. Day 1 – God creates light, dividing light from darkness (day and night).

    2. Day 2 – God creates the firmament (heaven/sky), dividing waters above and below.

    3. Day 3 – God gathers the waters together, forming dry land (earth) and seas; He creates vegetation.

    4. Day 4 – God creates the sun, moon, and stars to rule day and night and for signs and seasons.

    5. Day 5 – God creates sea creatures and birds.

    6. Day 6 – God creates land animals and finally man in His own image; He blesses them with dominion over the earth.

    7. God calls His creation “very good.”

  • Man’s Creation – God forms man (Adam) from the dust and breathes life into him.

  • The Garden of Eden – A paradise with the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam is placed there to tend it, with the command not to eat from the forbidden tree.

  • Creation of Woman – God declares it is not good for man to be alone. He makes Eve from Adam’s rib as a suitable helper.

  • Marriage Principle – Man and woman become “one flesh.”

  • Key Verse: “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:7)

Genesis 3 – The Fall of Man

  • The Temptation – The serpent deceives Eve, who eats the forbidden fruit and gives it to Adam.

  • The Sin – Both disobey God’s command and realize their nakedness.

  • God’s Confrontation – Adam blames Eve, and Eve blames the serpent.

  • The Curse

    • Serpent: cursed to crawl and enmity placed between his seed and the woman’s seed (first prophecy of Christ’s victory).

    • Woman: sorrow in childbearing and subjection to her husband.

    • Man: cursed ground; toil and sweat to bring forth food.

  • The Promise of Redemption – The “seed of the woman” prophecy (Genesis 3:15) points to Christ’s victory over Satan.

  • Expulsion from Eden – Adam and Eve are clothed with coats of skins (symbol of sacrifice), then driven out, with cherubim and a flaming sword guarding the tree of life.

  • Key Verse: “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)
