God has blessed Bellevue with a rich heritage that spans a century. Built on a solid foundation of proclaiming God’s Word, Bellevue began as a small mission church on the “east” side of the town—what’s now the midtown part of the city. Since its beginning in 1903, reaching people with the good news of Christ has always been Bellevue’s heartbeat.

Former pastors (L-R) Dr. R. G. Lee, Dr. Ramsey Pollard, and Dr. Adrian Rogers are standing in front of the old Worship Center of Bellevue Baptist Church downtown in the early 70s.

The hallmark of Bellevue’s commitment to God’s Word has been the steadfast Bible preaching of our pastors. Bellevue has been led by only four pastors since 1927. One of this century’s most renowned preachers, Dr. Robert G. Lee, pastored Bellevue from 1927 to 1960. Dr. Ramsey Pollard continued the tradition of strong pastoral leadership, laying the foundation for a pastor who would lead Bellevue into even greater years. In 1972, a pastor from Merritt Island, Florida, was called to lead Bellevue—Dr. Adrian Rogers.

Until he retired in March 2005, Pastor Rogers fed and shepherded this flock, leading as God blessed with unprecedented growth while maintaining a unique spirit of love and unity. In no other instance was this spirit more evident than in Bellevue’s move from its former location in Midtown to our present campus in Cordova in the fall of 1989. That same spirit of harmony and oneness in Christ continues today.

On Sunday, July 10, the Pastor Search Committee presented Dr. Steve Gaines to the church family. At the conclusion of the services the Bellevue family overwhelmingly voted to call Steve Gaines as the seventh Pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church. Dr. Gaines humbly and graciously accepted the call. He officially became the Pastor of Bellevue on August 1, 2005, and preached his first sermon as Pastor on September 11, 2005. Under Dr. Gaines’ leadership, Bellevue has continued to thrive. We are confident that our greatest days as a church are still ahead.

In 2007 Dr. Gaines led Bellevue into a new outreach emphasis, “Bellevue Loves Memphis.” Since that time, church members have been involved in practical service projects designed to bring Christ’s love to our city as we seek to fulfill our mission statement: Love God, Love People, Share Jesus, Make Disciples.

From the smallest child to the largest global strategy, we’re a church with a vision for Christ. Our vision is to lead all people into an ever-deepening relationship with the Lord, and build strong, Christ-centered families. That means strengthening our home base—our church. But that’s only the beginning. God has given our church a far-sighted vision. Through nationwide broadcasts and home missions, we’re praying and working towards nationwide spiritual awakening and revival. And we’re reaching around the world by giving, going, and broadcasting the Word. Bellevue has a bright heritage and an ever brighter hope for tomorrow. Changing the world. Changing lives. One heart at a time. One family at a time. That’s Bellevue’s heritage—and vision. Catch the vision with us.

“In Mark 12:29-31, Christ stated the Greatest Commandments are to love God and love people. In Matthew 28:18-20, the Great Commission calls us to share Jesus and make disciples. Thus Bellevue has its four-fold mission statement: Love God, Love People, Share Jesus, and Make Disciples. Children and adults alike can grasp on to such a simple, Scriptural description of what Bellevue is, and will be.” –Dr. Steve Gaines
