Why Do You Love the Lord?

1 John 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.
This is a powerful statement and one that would commonly be given if asked the above question.
It is a general truth that has much depth to it.
For example, the Psalmist said this: Psalm 116:1 I love the LORD, BECAUSE he hath heard my voice and my supplications. And in the next verse, he details a bit more: Psalm 116:2 BECAUSE he hath inclined his ear unto me…. This entire Psalm, though Messianic, has much application as to why we do so love the Lord Jesus.
Our love for the Lord is a responsive love, a love of consequent. God’s love for us is a causeless love. There is nothing in us that causes God to love us, but there is much in God that causes us to love Him.
God IS love (1 John 4:8). Realizing this, it is easy to understand why that verse also includes the statement that if one does not have love, then that one does not know God. One who is born of God gets the same nature as His Father. By the grace of God we realize the love of God, and by faith in Christ, we are born again. The love of God so transforms our minds and hearts that we find ourselves loving others like He loves us.
God loved Israel because God loved Israel. There was no cause in Abraham, Jacob, and Isaac that attracted Him to them. It was simply an act and choice of His love.
Deuteronomy 7:7-8 The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people: 8 But because the
LORD loved you….
Yes, there are a lot of specific answers as to why we love the Lord, and they are all a response to His love for us.
Reflection—God is the first cause of all things, even love.
