Psalm 86:15 But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.
The words mercy, merciful, and mercies occur over 300 times in the Bible. In studying mercy recently, I came across some information that expanded my understanding of it. God’s mercy is the compassionate act of God withholding the punishment that people rightfully deserve for their sins. God shows mercy because of His deep love and concern for man. It is part of God’s character. The ultimate act of mercy is Jesus taking the punishment for human sin on the Cross.
As Christians, showing mercy means choosing kindness, patience, and forgiveness instead of giving people what you think they deserve.
PRACTICE FORGIVENESS—Let go of grudges. Refuse to seek revenge or keep track of wrongs done against you. Forgive deeply. Offer a clean slate to people who hurt you, just as you hope to be forgiven. Resist harsh judgment. Avoid saying someone “got what they deserved” when they face a hard time.
HELP THOSE WHO ARE HURTING—Do good to enemies. Respond to unkindness with unexpected help, politeness, or a generous spirit. Look for small needs. Perform daily acts of kindness, like calling a lonely person or helping someone who is overwhelmed. Support the vulnerable. Reach out to outcasts, neighbors in trouble, or people who are physically or emotionally suffering.
Reflection—Be merciful to others as God has been merciful to you. Remember, God’s mercy is fresh and new every morning (Lamentation 3:22-23).
