Msg #2625 Our Father

What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

To his disciples Jesus said “When ye pray, say, Our Father, which art in heaven …” (Luk11:2). Christians do not put enough emphasis on those first two words. A blood-bought, born-again, I-been-redeemed, believer is adopted into the family of God, is joint-heirs with Christ, and a son of God who can call him Father. The use of the plural first-person “Our” connects us to Christ, and a host of other believers, and we are formally instructed to use it. We learn about proper relationships with God, by knowing about our human relationships, and we know about proper human relationships, by learning from our spiritual relationships with God. It’s a two-way learning experience for husbands & wives, and for fathers & sons.

Adam & Seth, Methuselah & Enoch were called “sons of God” but did not address God as their Father (Gen.6:2, Job.1:6, 2:1, 38:7); nor did Abraham, Moses, David, or God’s prophets. It’s a big deal that in Christ, we have been given power to be called the sons of God (Jhn.1:12), and given instruction to call him “Our Father.” Elijah prayed, “LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel”; Jeremiah, “Our LORD God”; Daniel, “Oh Lord, the great and dreadful God”; Zachariah and Malachi beseeched “The LORD of hosts.” When Jonah prayed unto the LORD from the belly of hell, he used his voice, (Jonah 2:2), as should I. When Jesus prayed he was heard to say “Oh my Father…” And when he teaches us to pray, he says, say “Our Father!” This Father’s Day look up seven things a father does best: Loves Unconditionally Jhn.3:16,Rom.5:8; Never Leaves Matt.28:20,Heb 13:5; Meets Needs Matt.6:31-34; Understands Ps 94:19,Heb 4:15,Ps 139:1-18; My Strength Rom.5:6,Ex.15:2,Ps.18,19,22,27, 28,118,140,144, Isa.12:2 et al; My Dwelling Place Ps 90:1; My Abba Father Mrk.14:36,Rom.8:15,Gal 4:6.
