Two earthquakes hit near Indonesia, sparking fear of a tsunami akin to the 2004 disaster that claimed some 250,000 lives in the Indian Ocean region that sits on an arc of fault lines known as the “ring of fire.” The initial 8.6-magnitude quake April 11 struck 14 miles under the ocean and about 270 miles from Indonesia’s Banda Aceh region. A second quake, magnitude 8.2, hit two hours later.
