Msg#2535a The New Covenant

What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

The New-Covenant is a culmination of the previous seven; it is the capstone, the eighth and final covenant. It rests upon the sacrifice of Christ, and secures the eternal blessedness of all who believe. It has roots in the Abrahamic Covenant; “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: … That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith … Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto(Gal 3:13-15, cf 16-29). It has no responsibility committed to man; it is final and irreversible, it is thus absolutely unconditional. This New-Covenant is 1) better than the Mosaic covenant because we “walk not after the flash, but after the spirit” (Heb.7:19, Rom.8:3-4); 2) established on better promises, not “if you obey then …”, but “I will put my laws in their minds and hearts …(Exod.19:5, Heb.8:10,12); 3) not fear based, under law obedience sprang from fear because “disobedience received a just recompense of reward(Heb.2:2, 8:10); 4) secures a personal relationship of the Lord to every believer (Heb.8:11); 5) does not just cover our sin it obliterates it! (Heb.8:12,10:17); 6) rests on an accomplished redemption; “blood of the new testament which is shed for many for the remission of sins … By his own blood he entered in once … Having obtained eternal redemption for us(Mat.26:28,Heb.9:12); AND finally and most importantly, 7) secures the perpetuity, the future conversion, and blessing of Israel; “I will make a new covenant with the house of israel, and with the house of judah … I will be there god, and they shall be my people(Jer.31:31-40).
