Msg#2534 The Mosaic and Promised-Land Covenants

What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

Of the eight covenants God makes in the Bible four deal exclusively with the Hebrews. In the Mosaic covenant God lays down the law as they go in to possess the Promised-Land. In this covenant “commandments” express the righteous will of God, “judgments” govern the social life of Israel, and “ordinances” govern the religious life of Israel. Jesus said of these, “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets; I am not come to destroy but to fulfill” (Mat.5:17). No mere man could keep the law, even Israelites, under the careful shepherding of almighty God could not keep it, AND it became a ministration of death, a ministration of condemnation; “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (2Cor.3:7-8, Rom.3:10,23,5:12). But man can be saved from that condemnation (John.3:16-19). Praise the Lord.

Israel’s utter failure to keep the law brings us to the Promised-Land covenant, which gives the conditions under which Israel entered and held the Promised-Land. God had promised Abram, “Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates” (Gen.15:18). Numbers 34 shows Israel’s borders encompassing only a small portion of that. The Promised-Land covenant, of Deuteronomy 30:1-10 included a harsh dispersion out of the land because of Israel’s disobedience (Deut.28:63-68). It included the future repentance of Israel while they are put out, the return of the Lord, and a miraculous complete restoration of the whole Promised-Land (Amos.9:9-14). It also included a National conversion, a judgment of Israel’s oppressors, and Israel’s National prosperity. A Bible student dare not be ignorant of these securely promised covenant provisions extended to God’s chosen nation, Israel. They are essential truths for those who would rightly divide the word of Truth (2Tim.2:15).
