Msg#2533 The Noahic and Abrahamic Covenants

What The Bible Says

Good Samaritan’s Penny Pulpit by Pastor Ed Rice

After 1,650 years of stewardship testing under the Adamic covenant, man failed horribly, and God sent a world flood saying, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth” (Gen.6). After the flood God made a covenant with Noah which amended the Adamic covenant. Now man would govern himself to rein-in the great wickedness in man’s heart (Gen.9). The flagrant arrogance of man in that dispensation brought the confusion of languages as God divided the earth into many nations. God specifically chose the family line of Shem to have a peculiar relationship with him (Gen.9:26-27); from Shem’s great-grandson, Eber, came the Hebrews, and their seventh generation was Abram. With Abram, God set up another covenant with seven distinct parts; God said, Abram, I will 1) make of thee a great nation, 2) bless thee, and 3) make thy name great, 4) thou shalt be a blessing, 5) I will bless them that bless thee, 6) curse them that curse thee, and 7) in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed. This Abrahamic covenant secures the “thy-seed” line that is to bring God’s anointed, the Messiah, the Christ, and it initiates the assurance of the promised land to belong to the Hebrews “for ever” (Gen 12:7,13:15, 15:18,17:18). It assured that through Isaac would come God’s chosen nation, Israel, the nation that would one day rule all the nations of the world. The Abrahamic covenant is the first of four covenants focusing on the Hebrew people, being God’s chosen nation, a peculiar people placed in a promised land. The next three covenants, the Mosaic Covenant, the Promised-Land Covenant, and the Davidic Covenant, deal directly with this nation of Hebrews, called Israelites. After their Babylonian captivity the children of Judah, were often called the Jews.
