Gentile believers have justly taught the reception of God’s so great salvation from the middle three sentences of Romans 10 ever since the Apostle Paul penned them nineteen centuries ago. Romans 10:9-10 is the capstone to our memorized Romans Road to Heaven, which leads with 3:10,23,5:8, and 6:23. Its precursor is John 3:16-18,36, and 5:24. Everyone needs to be saved from condemnation and every believer should memorize the road that got them there. But in a world filled with antisemitism it would behoove us to also focus on the first three sentences and the last three sentences of this tremendous chapter. “Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved … ” (Read Rom.10:1-3,19-21). Romans 10 is a centerpiece of Paul’s parenthetical detailing, to our amazement and Paul’s dismay, that many of God’s elect nation, Israel are missing out on becoming God’s elect people, born again, blood washed saints. Consequently, Romans 10 describes the end of the Law Dispensation (vr.4-5); what Christ did via his death, burial, and resurrection to bring in a Grace Dispensation (vr.6-7 cf.1Cor.15:1-4); what man, Jew or Greek, must do to become God’s elect people (vr.9-13); and where such saving grace comes from (vr.14-17).

This Epistle is a defense of righteousness of God (Rom.1:16-17); in chapter 9, God was righteous to choose and elect Israel to bring Christ into the world; in chapter 10 God is righteous when his elect nation misses the mark and the foolish nations received the gospel of peace; and in chapter 11 God will be righteous to remember and fulfill every promise he made to Israel.

Protestants, particularly Calvinists, who suppose Israel is not elect, and only they are, will never rightly divide the word of truth in these three chapters. Believers need to.

The perpetuity of the Church that Jesus built, his ecclesia, the local called-out and assembled body of believers, is an encouragement to true Baptists. For 1,985 years an unbroken line of Churches held common doctrines that made eight long term distinctives. They always believed in the authority of the inerrant, infallible, inspired Scriptures. The Bible was their sole authority for all faith and practice. They practiced autonomy of each local body, never acknowledging any denominational authority. Certainly knowing no pope, archbishop, or presbyters to edict their rules; always autonomous and independent. This continuous line of Churches had no priests; good Bible doctrine establishes the priesthood of all believers. They had only two ordinances, which were never called mysteries or sacraments. They practiced individual soul liberty and had only saved baptized members in their local assemblies. They recognized only two offices in their Church and had no boards to steer them. And, they knew the importance of keeping separate from rules of empires, magistrates, and governments. This long line of local autonomous Churches still exists today, and they will until Jesus comes. Then he meets them in the clouds before the great tribulation period when his wrath is poured out on this world. The Church that Jesus built, the true Church, has a branch near you. Flee the apostasy, flee the denominationalism and get into His true autonomous, independent, Bible believing Church. If you are in one, review these distinctives and its foundation. B is for Bible, A is for autonomous, P is for priesthood, T is for two ordinances, I is for individuals, S is for saved members, T is for two offices, and S is for separation. What does it spell? BAPTISTS. Oh, if you don't have these distinctives, kindly take that acronym off your Church sign.

Religions are man made systems for dealing with four questions, 1) Where did I come from? 2) Why am I here? 3) Where am I going after death? and 4) How do I get there? God deals with these questions in a 66 book revelation of truth, but Satan orchestrated six man made answers, three in BC religions, and three in AD religions. Hinduism and its Protestant reformation Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shintoism are the primary Eastern Religions from BC. And after Christ bruised Satan's head via the Cross on Calvary three primary AD religions were used to try and stomp out Christianity. When Judaism rejected their Messiah their laws and sacrificial system which pointed to the first Advent of Christ, became hollow and baseless. Their diabolical nature was made obvious when they wanted to kill the resurrected Lazarus as well as the Christ who resurrected him. They plotted the destruction of Christianity until their barbaric annihilation by Titus in 70 AD. Then, 300 years later Emperor Constantine the Great forced everyone in the Roman Empire to convert to what he called “Christianity.” The mongrel Roman pagan “Christianity” called Catholicism has deceived millions with its diabolical subtleties. When the Roman Emperor empowered the Roman Church to take over Christianity they 1) Thought they were the New Jerusalem and called Millennialists heretics, 2) Thought the Bible was allegorical and only pious “Clergy” should read and interpret God's secret hidden sayings, and 3) Thought men in black robes could be priests and intercessors for the ignorant masses they called “laity.” When Protestants finally protested about Rome selling indulgences they kept these primary errors completely intact. Don't believe it? Just ask your baby baptizing, robed clergy, SHE won't either. The “Church,” whether Roman or Protestant, is apostate and opposing Christ, just like their founder.

Intimate friendship only happens when two come to know and to trust each other. The more one knows and trusts, the more intimate the bond. Everyone needs them but you can count your intimate friends on one hand. Relationships mature and improve as this truth is learned and leaned on. Consciousness helps. If what you know about God comes from the theologians who wrote the Westminster Confession, you don't know squat. In God's revelation of himself to man, he comes to know, and then to trust a man named Abram. When God is cramped into a Calvinist's little box, he already knows everything, and many Bible verses must be trashed. “For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings” (Prov 5:21). In Hebrew, “ponder” means ponder. In the Bible God comes to know a person and eventually comes to trust some of them. When they reciprocate, there is an intimate bond of friendship. All this takes trials. Spending more time with a Bible, and less with the theologian, helps one see the splendor of this reality. In Genesis 17, God gingerly takes a step of trust in Abram. It is awesome to watch the development of God's friendship with Abram. God reveals to Abram that he is El-Shaddai, the nourisher and sustenance of life itself. Understand that friendship takes a development form both sides, and here, “God talked with (Abram) saying, As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee” (vr. 4) When God was ready he gave Abram a new name. He made his covenant clear, then gave Sarai, Abraham's wife a new name. Trust and Obey, pass a couple tests, and become a friend of God. He is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.

The excitement and energy of the resurrection morning is best captured in the foot race toward the empty tomb. The casual unbelief and indifference toward the resurrection is best captured in the walk down the Emmaus road. The brazen doubt and skepticism award is won, hands down, by the disciple forever tagged as 'Doubting Thomas.' So I gauge my own response and Jesus responds to each in kind. Three disciples which were close at hand whenever Jesus turned around became Christ's inner circle. It is not revealed how James missed the foot race, but Peter and John only heard that the body of their Lord was missing before the race ensued. Only a glimpse into the empty tomb and a noting of the napkin that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes caused their assured belief. Inner circle disciples are that way, and the Lord is pleased with quick belief and ready faith. The indifference of the disciples on the Emmaus road is rebuked by Christ, “O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?” It is the Scriptures that dispel their foolishness and his breaking of bread that reveals the truth. Doubt and skepticism is given brazen rebuke. “Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless but believing.” Quick belief and ready faith please our Lord. And without faith it is impossible to please him. These three recorded reactions to the Christ and His resurrection make a good barometer to measure faith. Can others see your faith? The day after Easter being April fools it should be asked, Whose fool are you?
