Historian Stephen Douglas Wilson recounts how Easter grew into prominence as an observance in Southern Baptist churches during the 20th century, particularly when it became connected with the convention’s annual offering for home missions. In the 19th century, however, many Baptist ministers had opposed its observance, seeing Easter as being associated with worldliness and even paganism.
